We are happy to announce that we will give a talk about RFID and consumers at the 8th ECR Day in Hamburg, Germany.
The talk will cover new ideas on future interaction at the point of sale, as well as how to make use of Near Field Communication in retail industries.
The 8th ECR Day will be held from September 11th to 12th. The organizers expect more than 1400 participants and 500 companies to attend the event.

We will be doing a lecture and workshop at one of the most important hacker events this year: Chaos Communication Camp takes place every four years near Berlin. This year from 8 to 12 August.
The lecture is titled “Fun with NFC Mobile Phones” and is scheduled at Day 3, 10 August at 12.30 pm. If you are interested, please give us a visit. We are looking forward to seeing you there.
The lecture will give an extensive overview over NFC technology, available devices, current and future applications. We will also show what we have done with NFC so far. In the workshop we will give a short introduction into building your own NFC applications.

Our team has made a submission to the MobileHCI 2007 conference in Singapore for the demonstration panel. We were accepted with the paper entitled “NFC for retailers”.

Another approach for retailers seeking an extension of retail space for the tech savvy crowd of myspace.com or youtube.com users.
IconNicholson mashes up social computing and near-field communication technologies with youth shopping habits named Social Retailing(SM): “At kiosks, teens can make buying decisions together, see what others have purchased, as well as purchase items that are not in stock in the store.”
The source also provides a nice video.
Interestingly they also mention NFC as key technology to “further serves to help retailers monitor inventory in real time and collect data that provides valuable insight into customer mindsets, behaviors and evolving needs.” That is a case also provided by the Prosumer B2B edition.

The IEB students team has successfully participated in the first European NFC competition and has been invited to the final round taking place at the first European NFC Developers Summit at WIMA 2007 in Monaco!
We are very happy about the invitation and are looking forward to meeting the European NFC developer community. See you down there!

Vodafone and Deutsche Bahn announced their project Touch and Travel at CeBIT yesterday. They want to test ticketing with NFC phones starting in three German cities (including Berlin) in October. Vodafone Press Release. The project website is also quite informative.

Joca and guenstiger.de offer a price check for mobile phones. The cooperation was announced end of last year. Spiegel reported recently in this article (german). It seems, you still have to type in product names.

According to this article (german) in yesterday’s Financial Times Deutschland HP, publicis and more or less all relevant mobile phone manufacturers are planning a joint venture to create a mobile advertising market with 2D barcodes. Interestingly, this news only seems to exist in Germany where it was happily copied from FTD by some newspapers.
